One of the biggest mistakes authors make when starting out is to write about something, No for someone. In reality, the success of a nonfiction book comes from a deep connection with the reader.
In episode 2 of the series Simplified Selfpublishing on YouTube, we're talking about exactly that: how to define your reader and how to write a book that responds to their real needs.
Who is your reader?
Ask yourself these essential questions:
- What does my reader really want?
- What problems does he perceive are stopping him from getting there?
- What is the real problem, which they may not even see, but which they can address through the book?
Clear formula for your manuscript
A simple exercise you can do:
I'm writing for [demographic audience], who want [desire], but struggle with [perceived problem]. Maybe they don't yet realize that the real challenge is [real problem].
This formula gives you instant clarity in structuring your book.
Questions that connect
To dig deeper, think about:
- What do you have in common with your reader?
- What questions do you get most often about the subject of the book?
- What are your audience's biggest fears and concerns?
By answering these questions in the book, you create an authentic bridge between you and the reader.
